It can be difficult to bring together three-dimensional sculpture and two-dimensional mixed media under a cohesive theme; finding their relationships can be like comparing apples to oranges. Twist successfully juxtaposes the work of Emily Somoskey and James Houghton, two artists working in starkly different styles of collage and ceramics respectively, focused on the language of materiality.

JAMES HOUGHTON

James explores the form of the vessel through ceramics and the role that it has played throughout history. Using different styles and techniques, he takes the vessel out of its original context of use and places it in a new world that focuses on lack of function. By using wheel thrown elements in combination with mold making and hand building to stack forms that look as if they are defying gravity, the vessel is no longer able to be used in its traditional manner.

April 7 – May 2

Emily Somoskey and James Houghton share a thread of materiality and deceptive spontaneity. Their work turns the worlds of painting and ceramic form on their heads with highly crafted twists on realities. In their work, structures appear to be simultaneously coming together and pulling apart. Finding function and footing requires the viewer to draw from their own imagination. The work is in the play and the play is in the work.

James Houghton explores the functional vessel outside of its intended use through unconventional ways of working with clay. He mixes this with his skills from throwing on the wheel to create a body of work that relates to functional ceramics but makes the viewer wonder about the purpose of the vessels.

This July brings the 26th edition of the Recent Graduates show at Blackfish Gallery. This much anticipated summer event showcases some of Oregon's most gifted young artists representing the fourteen Oregon colleges and universities that offer BAs, BFAs and MFAs in Fine Art. Twenty seven recent graduates were selected by their art faculty to exhibit during this milestone year. This year’s cohort presents work in photography, sculpture, drawing, painting, digital and other media. The show offers viewers an opportunity to see what themes engage this generation of artists, and how the art object is continually being reshaped.
